I learned how to hold a grudge from my mama. She was really good at ignoring you if she was mad at you. Once, she stopped speaking to me when I was about 12 years old. I don’t know what I had done that time. I got tired of the silent treatment and wrote an apology letter, titled it “Ma,” and placed it on the living room table. She left it where it lay for two weeks. I’m not sure what prompted us to finally start speaking again but I remember her asking me what the letter had said. I told her she should have read it. I had finally thrown it in the garbage.

When I stopped speaking to my sister, it was easy. We had never been close anyway. I just took that loss for the money she never paid me back for her apartment and chalked it up to the game. Fool me once shame on me. Things became complicated when my mama was actively dying from cancer. My sister didn’t have my phone number so she would have to get other people that I did communicate with to contact me. This wasn’t the time for that foolishness. I called her and made sure she had my number so she could keep me updated on mama’s condition. When mama was sick and in the hospital, I had flown to Alabama to spend some time with her. I hung out with my sister some too and we had a really good time together. She introduced me to her friends. We drank, smoked, and went to the club. I fit right in with her and her friends, even though I was almost 20 years older. I had always been young at heart and you wouldn’t have guessed my age if I didn’t tell you. Younger men always took an interest in me. I had always been a really good dancer too so her friends got a kick out of hanging out with me at the club. We had a blast.

My sister had been on my mama’s coattail strings for so long that when my mama died, she was virtually homeless. No matter how I feel about a person, I can’t stand by and watch them suffer so I let her move in with me. She and my co-dependent daughter were staying with me at the same time. It was awful. Even though my sister worked, when my mama died, my sister didn’t contribute one dime towards the funeral arrangements. She didn’t even offer. My uncle, my mama’s brother, gave me $1500 towards the funeral and I put in the other $3000 out of my tax refund. Some folks have no shame. SMH..
